I just found a new (probably old way) of heating up canned food. Stick it in pot of boiling water and wait. Similar to putting a potato on an engine to bake it. Anyone know of any other ingenious ways of cooking pre-prepared food? (Yes, i know that's redundant, but I can't think of a better way of expressing it). HOW DO YOU MAKE INSTA-FOOD? I HAVE MY LIST OF INSTA-FOOD, ...what about you?

Old...

Its thermal transfer... Thermal mass determines how long something needs to cook all the way through. Its the same principle behind MRE heaters, we add water to Potasium Nitrate tabs and they create heat which warms the casing of the meal and heats it up. Simplier concept, same way an egg is hard boiled.

We also use to take our MRE's and place them on top of or behind the radios in the big vehicles and it would cook them quick. Just like placing them in the engine compartment.

Actually Tael, it involves heat transfer on many levels (not just thermal mass: radiation, convection and conduction are also involved -->internal and external<--).

Anyways, How the heck did you retire as an E-6 in the Marines? After 20 years of service? Didn't the military policy change about 20 years ago regarding promotions and release from duty? E-6 + 20 years service????? Confusing.

If I did my full 20 I would be retiring next year... You must have not been around during story time... I was a counter terrorism specialist.. The Marines lent me out to other groups in the Pentagon for three years...

During that time I have been shot twice, stabbed twice (including through my left lung), blown up and sent flying on four different occasions, blown out my knee, shrapnel in 20% of my body (no, magnets and metal detectors are not fun), crush four disc's in my back including 2 in my neck, blown out my left shoulder, 50% nerve loss to my left arm and 75% nerve loss to my left hand. I am legal handicapped now...

I wasn't allowed time to heal between assignments. Was never at a rear area or state side for more than 30 days straight... So I'd go on missions while I still had fresh wounds, bruises, and stitches still in me. I got sick of it...

So when I was offered a chance to supervise a whole new military command focused on the type of unit I helped developed and tested I opted to get out instead so that I could heal. I came home with the knife wound to my lung only 3 weeks old.

The Marines offered for a year to take me back.

Regardless of whether the branch of service you served in did you justice or not, glad you came home! Been shot at and had knife issues also. Only difference is no injuries worth mentioning (been lucky).

Grab some brew's and some microwave food instead of some MRE's/C-Rations (whatever they call 'em these days) and enjoy!

Does anyone know how to make that German pork?/beef (not sure)? ), but it's cooked chemically. As best I remember, you wrap it in foil with vinegar/lemon-juice? and put it in the fridge for a bit... (if this sounds familiar, let me know). I had an ex-girlfriend that was German and made it often, but didn't bother to do anything besides EAT!
