Your computer will not be able to use all 4GB of the RAM with a 32-bit operating system. It will use about 3.5 GB. It would use the same amount of RAM even if you put in the 16 GB. With a 64-bit operating system, it could use all 16 GB if you had it.

If you are just gaming, 4GB is fine.
SLI is pointless in your budget range. Plus nVidia sli is faster right now.
And 3 15K RPM drives makes no sense for gaming.
Why not get an SSD and, say, an ordinary 1TB RAID 1 volume?
Basically, your bang for buck in games is all screwy, because you have too much money in the I/O subsystem and not enough in proper gaming performance.
I could easily reconfigure that for less money, get more hard drive space, and superior performance. [ This Message was edited by: dj42 {C?} on 2009-07-07 19:13 ]

just purchased a refurbished compaq a couple months ago. Click my xfire link in my sig and you can see the sceps. No complaints AT ALL. I play this game and SWG with no video lag whatsoever, no pauses, and I have never had my crafters' datapad come up so fast as I do now (on SWG that is. I have HUNDREDS of recipes and my old PC took up to 1 minute of pause before it would open).
Price?
$359.
Bought two, gave one to my mom.
Total: $710 after taxxes for TWO PCs.
Like I said, click my link and you'll see the stats.
I have a better video card another pc I was thinking of swapping out with, but tbh I haven't felt the need at all, so I probably won't.
Try for a refurbished PC if you can. They are usually just PCs that had a small issue that were returned to the store. They can't resell them as a new PC again, and after repair, they knock the price WAY down and resell them. This one came with a 1 year warranty, I think.

Playing this game on :
Netbook (weighs 1.5 kg)
10 inch screen (1024 x 600 res)
1.6GHz
1Gb Ram
XP
No mouse - just touchpad
Handles the game easy. Bought it as I travel alot - but it has has taken over from my Gaming PC and Media PC which I rarely turn on now.

| I'm not JUST gaming. i'm trying to get rid of most of these older workstations i got laying around.
4gb should be enough for just gaming agreed, but i want to integrate atleast three workstations into one that will have a decent gaming preformance..
SSD v/s SAS in raid 0 ?... o and yer suggesting Raid 1 ?? oo how lovely, better check yer raid manual again.. you need it.
and yes i'm spending a lot into the I/O subsystem because i'm sick and tired of keeping this DAS running, its old, creates a hell of a noize and sucks 400watt constant..
And if you have a suggestion to how to reconfigure for a better gaming go ahead.
My requirements are:
Antec Skeleton.
2 PCI-E 8x (Network cardl & SAS controler).
2 PCI 66mhz (soundcard & matrox card)
1 SATA connector on mobo (for dvd drive).
1 Gbit Nic onboard.
Main Graphics card is able to have two screens with 1024/1280
What i expect to be running on it:
Windows (i think either vista x64 or 7 x64)
VM-Ware workstation, with two VM's running guaranteed.
Couple of RDP, VNC and ssh connections.
Multiple browsers (i don't close tabs)
never ending fun of music and anime.
Rosetta@home if AFK for 5 minutes.
O and yes Games.
What i don't need
Hard Disk Space.
-Storage space is already provided by local NAS.
Loads of SATA connectors on the mobo.
-I am going to use either a dedicated SAS or Sata controler.
Nvidia products.
-I'm not a ATI fanboy, but i am a ANTI Nvidia activist. + Company is the same so no discounts on those products (and yes big discount)..
Make yer recommendations.. I dare ya.
And make me trow these four other workstations out of the window..
p.s. http://www.alternate-b2b.nl
one of the few places where i can put it on the company's tab..
uuuuuuh I MEAN discount!! ya discount!

Not quite Ham, I may have made a joke about it, but I think NASA have much more floating point calculation speed than I do unfortunately =(.
Current rig:
CPU: Intel Core i7 940
Mobo: Asus P6T
RAM: 6Gb (3x 2gb)
GPC: Sapphire ATI HD4890 1024Mb x2
OS: XP 32/64, Vista 32/64, 7 32/64, Ubuntu 64
I got two Western Digital VelociRaptor VR150 's given to me as a present running in RAID. Considering they're 'pretty' cheap (£210 atm), they seem a steal.
Aiming to swap out the motherboard for two sets of i7's if the benchmark's show that it benefits (although 16 hypothetical cores is a bit extreme, nothing's even close to using the 8 at the moment).
The annoying thing is, the above rig won't run DarkSpace for some odd reason. Luckily I have an "old" system of mine running a file server so I can still play .
And to play devils advocate against dj42 : CrossfireX is much more supported and faster than SLI at the moment =). Plus the X2's are two GPU chipsets on one card, hence it doesn't run with CrossfireX - just acts as a single card. [ This Message was edited by: BackSlash *Jack* on 2009-07-08 05:23 ]
