Hi all,
i know i havnt been playing on this darkspace server for long (nearly 2 weeks now ;P) but, im probably not the only one who is sick of rebuiding planets after someone bombwhoring or getting pwnt by a guy in an ed.

btw, before i continue, if this belongs somewhere else i apologise and could you please move it to the correct position:P

i have a somewhat simple solution to this problem (although i doubt many people are going to like it (esp some icc players(ofc no offense intended)))

I played Darkspace Asia for a little over a year, reaching fleet admiral (not that great, but still) and we encountered similar problems.

the admin, decided, after a long discussion (i found the chatlogs the other day... but thats irrelivent) to ban modding and upgrading in the metaverse.

im aware that this might have been tried/ suggested here before, but i think it is a good solution. I played for a few months in unmodded ships, and that was, quite frankly, the best playing experience ive hand on this game.

the pros (in my opinion)
> no abused ships e.g. escort destroyer, picket destroyer
> bombing is more of a team effort, although not impossible solo, if the player is very good
> longer combat times - although armour level is reduced, gun leves are reduced also, which means, with a gud supper in your fleet, you can stay in combat for a longer time.
> lower prestige loss on death - if your ships arnt modded, then you loose less prestige (as far as im aware)
> dreads are again 'useful' - since dreads pack decent armour and weapons stock, they are much more potent force than in modded fights.
> Wormhole devices are restricted to FAs and GAs, which helps to discourage home system flattenings.

the cons (also in my opinion)
> Bombing is restricted to MIRVing, except for the kluth. im unsure whether there is a workaround to this, other than just allowing ppl to get on with it (from what i can tell, things wont change much here anyway)
> alternative methods of bombing (fighter bombing being the main thing here) are nerfed.
> takes away a large aspect of the game (modding)
> means the mods have to watch the server more closely, to enforce the rules. (possibly the biggest con, since i understand that mods/admins have a lot to do other than making sure ppl behave)

I think (even if no-one else cares what i think), this is a viable temporary solution to the major downsides of this patch, primarily because it doesnt require any coding, or waiting, it can be done quickly. Also, in my experience, it is more how DS was meant to be played (although, since ive only ever played 483, idk what it was like b4).

thanks for reading, even if it just gets disregarded as a bad idea, it was worth mentioning

credit to the DSA staff (during my time) who came up with this (or at least i think they did)

thanks again

before anyone else says "THIS AINT DARKSPACE ASIA!!!" i will say that playing unmodded was very fun. we did it a couple times in a player run server. the main issue here is rule enforcement. the mods and admins can't be on 24/7, so there are gonna be some rule-breakers out there. i would like to see this rule come in enforcement, but i highly doubt it.

The entirety of .483 would indeed, be alot better if modding and upgrading were not possible HOWEVER -

Its absolutely impossible to enforce without a patch, which is also impossible.

Therefore any discussion it is pretty much.. pointless.

if modding ships was taken away i think alot of people would quit ds would lose a large portion of its profit and the end result would be all this coming to a slow and painful death now if u want ds to die like so many pay games before it i sujest u start this new and backwards plan and then think about the next game u wish to replace it with i might not know much about ds but i do know if people do not like what they are paying for the cash will just stop flowing.

@darkinterceptor, i admit, yes it is a long shot. but, i get the distinct feeling that everyone has given up on trying to come up with a temp solution here. and why would they quit. as leonide said, it CAN make it more fun, and i do stress the can. changes are never easy. if any solution to any problem (within a community) is to work, it must have the support of the community. why such dissaproval of an idea?
after so long of playing 483, it looks to me like quite a few ppl could use a change. i dont see why everyone is negative towards ideas which people come up with wen they are trying to help a bad situation. I am aware that the chance of this actually being considered by the staff are slim... but desperate times need desperate measures eh?

something i failed to mention earlier:
with regard to 'enforcing' the rule, i dont feel it would be any different from people using an illegaly modded ship.
if players see someone using a modded ship, it could be reported, with a screenshot, just as described.

one last note.
it seems to me that people dont want a change because theyve seen a lot of 'attempts' at fixing the problem before. I respect that a lot of people have a lot more experience (in terms of how long tey have been playing), but i live by; 'theres no harm in trying'

actually coeus's idea isnt bad at all

ofcourse we would have to constantly set everyones credits to 0 which would be a lot mor ecomplicated. But they the idea works But when you run into shield generators... then that might be a problem

I like the idea and would be willing to give it a 1-2 week trial, if the mods/admins can make it happen. Coeus' idea seems a very managable means of execution.

When you log in, the server sets your credits to zero. then find the part of the code that generates debris from deaths and disable it.

Done.

Here is why that wont happen that way though. That beta they are building is all that is left of 483's code. they took 483 and started overwriting and rewriting it. They cannot make/release a 483 patch anymore.

However, Additional moderators would be able to monitor people. They could promote 10 or so more people to moderator for the duration of the 1-2 week trial run, and see if it causes problems. Then when/if we decide to abandon the idea or when 484 comes out, the new mods are demoted back down, as they are no longer needed.

Any problems with that plan?

this is a terrible idea. imagine flying a dread at 15 with all cl's and torps... they are already big, slow targets. as long as ur enemy stayed over 200 away u wouldnt be able to do any damage.

um. assault class dreads are designed for point-jumping attacks. without upgraded armor, it would be a lethal point jump to the target.
