Is it generally recommended to upgrade armor and shields to lvl 10 while using up a lot of your money? And which is better? Reflective or ablative armour?
Thanks

Armor, engines, and jump drives are the first items that should be upgraded to maximum level, as they have most impact on your ships survivability.

And you won't loose your money. It might say so but when you trade your ship in or get exploded, you'll get them back.

People generally upgrade everything to the maximum level (sans bombs) as things tend to work alot better.
Also, due to the way credits work currently, you dont actually lose any of your money. Consider it investing in your ship. When you aren't using it (its in your garage), its credit value (the value of the ship and its upgrades) is put back into your credits, and taken out when you take the ship out and use it. And get it back when its destroyed. So you wind up generally reusing the same credits over and over.
Also in the case of reflective or ablative, they're special kinds of armor for different situations. Regular armor that you start with is what most people use, as it is pretty average. Reflective provides excellent beam resistance but has less HP and is vulnerable to everything else, and ablative is resistant to everything but doesnt repair on its own like other armor.
Shields, if you didnt know, are ICC only tech, and just to explain the difference between reflective and active shields when you're bound to run into them, active takes constant energy but has more HP, while reflective only takes energy when it takes damage.
Also if you ever run across Kluth, you'll notice they have organic armor. Its Kluth only and cannot be replaced. Its thinner than your average printer paper (less HP) but repairs faster than any other type or armor. Widely considered useless but neccessary.

Correction: There is no "reflective" shield type. There are active shields and reactive shields. Ent's description still applies - just switch out reflective for reactive.
- Edit: I wanted to look cool.
