Hi, i used to play this game several years ago, back then there were hundreds of people online, on every server and it was a blast to jump into the admiral server and see huge battles kick of and be a part of the action.

After a while i decided to give the MV a go and ended up joining PB, we ran around as a small group taking plants and holding off much larger fleets than ourselves and it was mega fun even if i was in a smaller ship at the time.

For reasons unknown i left the game and now i come back and horrified to see soo few online.

So my question is, whats the game like now?

On Life Support.

484 is due out in 2 Weeks™ and beta is constantly being updates with new content, Darkspace is experiencing a drop in subscription rates after this patch was found to be errornous in many aspects, but both staff and community has hung on to keep this game going, awaiting the new patch that should fix it all.

No real need. What needed to be said was already said, apparently.

i see, a real shame really as i was looking to play the game again and to see the servers at such a low population is depressing.

Is it even possible for a new account to start from fresh?

Its in the "should have been rolled back the instant the patch was discovered to be a load of crap" stage.

Well.... we waited 10 years for the duke so why not for the jesus patch too...

Suprisingly, no other game so far tried to redo darkspaces earlier success so DS was kind of lucky to have people look back on it, hoping it will get ouf of that swamp of fail and suck in due time (before we die of old age).

That's actually a point I wanted to raise; I haven't played the game in nigh-on 5 years (maybe 4, maybe 6, not sure).

So I grabbed a copy of the client, patched it, paid my sub, and logged on.

It's not changed. In 5 years. The graphics are the same. The sounds are the same. There's no new ships, planets, technology, weapons or features.

To be fair, I might be missing something here - I never made it to Admiral before, and I'm a long way off that now.

But my question is - exactly where has everyone's $9.99 quid a month been going? It doesn't appear to have gone on game development, and the servers don't really need enormous amounts of bandwith (online : 35 as I speak)

What did I miss? Why has this brilliant game apparently stagnated for 5 years?

Because the people that work on it are volunteer. Except Faustus, who has another job coding for a different company.
