Today in the lobby i found my self in a discussion about stearomg the ship in darkspace with the QWASD
Quote:
| leonide: "W and S has always been speed for me...dunno what your smoking ele" |
| This made me curious so i asked a little more.Quote:
| 05:36:24 Daedalus: "you use letters to control your ship"
05:36:26 Daedalus: "thats silly"
05:36:35 Daedalus: "arrows are for ship controling" |
| So i taught about asking you people here in DarkSpace
How do you fly?
To start with my self:
Stearing:
I stear with the QWASD with my left hand.
Left Hand:
I stear and fire the grouped weapons 123456, as well as use Shift, Alt, CRTL and the buttons V,E,R,T,Z,X, and F2.
Right Hand:
I use the mouse with this hand as well as the numpad for ICC shield rotation, use device activation as well as the device group 7890, other buttons e.g. U,B,P,Y,/,K,F3,F4,F5,F6 and ofcourse the Enter.
groups:
1, 2 and 3 are cannons and other regular assault weapons .
4 and 5 are used for Torpedo's and Missiles.
6 is used for either Fighters, bombs or special device (e.g. switching between ecm and eccm or togeling aug-gens).
7 if reserved for all CL's set to PD.
8 and 9 are reserved for engines.
(If you wonder why engines, try turning them of and watch your signature)
Why?:
I'm a gamer, i played a lot of 3d shooters over the time and have gotten a fair amount of WASD hours accumilated, the more you try the more you feel comfortable with it. my control over all the buttons has almost no limit. As for the right hand, its usefull to have your hand on the mouse to watch around you as well as setting repair priority, or even help out by clicking on a button.
<(^'^)>
Thats my setup, post below or give comment
Eledore Massis.
[edit] Cleand this mess up a bit.

How do you fly?
To start with my self:
Stearing:
I stear with the arrow keys. Mostly because thats how I learned, and I don't like how the turning works when using letters.
Left Hand:
1234 for weapons grouping, tab for view, and shift for detonations/stopping cannons. Oh and caps locks for when smarting gets angry. Left Alt for Vent.
Right Hand:
I use the mouse with this hand. Icc shield rotation and to priotized broken devices, and to shoot my cannons off 1 at a time. Creating a nice line effect.
groups:
1- Cannons, and Disruptorts
2- torps
3- Assualt Disruptors
4- Core Weapon(s), if no super weapon the 4 is used for fighters so I dont have to reach for th n key.
5- Fighters if I have a core weapon(s).
**Aslo I put my cloak up on whatever number is last. So for my scale cannons are 1, torps are 2, cloak would be 3. **
Why?:
This is how I learned. I started using the arrow keys right away when I first started playing. Then once I got rid of the space bar i liked having my left hand free so I could deotonate my torps, only shoot weapons necessary at the time, and to stop particle cannons in flight from smashing to my brothers in arms.. Although sometimes I like to get a nubly and mash my spacebar.
Quick edit to add/fix some stuff I missed as well.

How do you fly?
Steering:
I steer with the arrow keys useing both my hands (and on the odd occation i use the letters and very rarely i use the mouse to steer and move)
Left Hand:
I use this hand to Steer, fire my weapons and the other things (in other words i only use this hand for the keyboard)
Right Hand:
I use this hand on mouse and the keyboard
groups:
1. for Core weapons and Building
2. for PD
3. for Cannons
4. for Torps or Missiles or HCLs
5. for Missiles and, or, Torps
8. for Aux Gens
9. for Drives
Fighters and bombs are the same B and N
Why?:
well the reason why i have that setup is UNKNOWN so i cant really tell ya as this is unique to me as ive never used this for other games

How do you fly?
To start with my self:
Stearing:
I usually navigate the lobby with the mouse button and using the back button in GCQL alot. I also alt+tab to firefox alot.
Left Hand:
Ctrl+c, Ctrl+v, ctrl+a, etc. Also helps with typing
Right Hand:
Uses the mouse for quick scrolling and data retrieval. Also for typing
groups:
Emote list:
_xxxx = Top of the list, most common ones
Anything else I haven't used in a year or so, or are so old I don't want to touch and remember the memories
Also, I forum camp alot too. I usually check every forum I have access to (and the ones I don't to see if i've magically obtained access to them) to see whats new)
Why?:
Well, as a lobby camper, one must be well prepared and on guard for idea situations to make fun of people.

Yeah, I just use the arrow keys, and numbers, and the spacebar.
I simply smash the spacebar at said target till either I or the Target dies.

I use WASD with close access to control for targetting, 123456 for weapons control, and various other letters and controls.
Other hand is mouse.

Stearing:
I use arrow keys for stearing, stearing with WASD makes no sense when the object of this game is to dodge fire as swiftly as possible.
Left Hand:
I use this hand to only stear with the Arrow keys. (Yes, it may feel weird at first, but my arms cross when I have to take my right hand off the mouse to shoot). When having to use a core weapon, i will fire normally pressing 1 with my right hand, but then open F2, zoom in on target location, then use my LEFT hand (index finger) to press F2 again when core weapon is near target (if not going to be a direct hit), then as soon as possible with my pinky I hold shift and then press 1 with my middle finger. Thats the only time I will fire with my left hand. It is important for me to always have turning control at all times, thus not using right hand for mouse too.
Right Hand:
Mouse control. When I have a target, I lock on, then move my right hand over to the number keys, while also having the room to have my thumb on space if i should need it. So how do I self det my torps? My left hand on the arrow keys has a pinky finger free to rest on the RIGHT SHIFT of the keyboard.
Groups:
1- core
3- cannons
4- beams
6- torps
7- fighters (N is out of reach)

How do you fly?
Steering
I use the arrow keys, because like Ospolos said there is not reason to make anything less than a sharp turn. If you want to tigthen up your turn you adjust speeds, not the silly WASD config.
Left Hand
I use this for pretty much everything. I use it to operate my arrows, rotate shields when I'm ICC, left-shift/spacebar for quick detonations, and operating my weapons.
Right Hand
Right hand is generally just the mouse. I like using my mouse a lot, constantly turning camera angles to see whats coming at me. If I'm in a pitched 1 on 1 with someone, I may move it over to the arrows while keeping my left on weapons at all times.
Groups
1 = Cannons or Disruptors, depending on the ship
2 = Torps/missiles/launcher weapons
3 = HCLs
If I have reloads, then 8,9 (or 7,8,9) are set to reloads. I set core weapons to whatever I feel like, just so its not something I'll accidentally tap.
Why?
I have no idea why. It just works.

Heh...
Seems to me that I'm the only person who uses both WASD and the arrow keys in combat. If I'm in a hard about & think I will be for a bit (turning matches for exampe) or if I'm flying something big (AD/Station) where the turns take a while, WSAD, but for active engagement with smaller ships & smaller course corrections in a fight, and also to dodge fire (in ships that are capable of such an act) its all arrows.
Left hand is always centered on the WSAD keys, common weapon groups are:
1) Cannons/Ruptors
2) Torps (or missiles for stations, I don't mix torps & missiles)
3) On ships with Core Weapons, this is the key. On UGTO/ICC ships without core weapons where I'm engaging K'Luth, beacon. On K'Luth ships, Assault Ruptors or PD
4) On ships with core weapons (ICC & UGTO) Beacon. K'Luth ships with core weapons Assault Ruptors. Otherwise, PD/Fighters
5) ICC & UGTO ships with Core Weapons - HCLS. Anything else, PD/Fighters.
6,7,8 - random junk like PD, mines etc
9) Build.
Right hand switches between mouse & numberpad (not just when ICC, SHIFT+Numberpad 8 == full speed. SHIFT+Numberpad 2 == 0 speed. Most time spent on mouse.

actually i do exactly what u do coeus, i use the WASD keys for general turning and the arrow keys when precision is needed..(altho, i prefer the WASD keys myself..dont ask why, i just do )
my left hands the one that does the turning with WASD (left handed) and uses the 3 and 6 keys.
my right uses the arrow keys when need be and activates shields and stuff
3=cannons, cls
6=torps
(in the case of core weapons...i change ships)

I use WASD most of the time for steering. Towards the end of the last time I played, I tried to seriously use the arrow keys for dodging... felt more responsive, but at the same time by the time my clumsy hands made it across the board, the torpedos had hit.
For flying, I try to throw myself at the ground and miss.

The only keys I ever used were the arrows, f1, j, d, ctl, and spacebar.
