I had an idea for darkspace.... gravity! It's probably been discussed before, but my search-fu is weak.

Anyway, it would work like this. If a ship is withing anywhere from 100 gu to 1000 gu (depending on planet size) your ship would begin to drift towards it at a speed of, oh, 2 gu/sec. Orbiting the planet would negate this. Missiles and fighters would be affected too.

My thought is that this would make a noticable difference between fighting in open space and fighting near a planet. Now, I don't think it should affect people in mid-jump... you're moving too fast for gravity to affect you.

I honestly don't know how hard this would be to code. It was just an idea that I thought up in 15 minutes.

Comments? Flames? [insert reply type here]?

I think gravity would be a great idea!

Edition:

Gravity should effect jumps, so you would have to plan a proper jump so that it would not go through a planets gravity well... (BSG style)
If your far i nthe well, you hit the planet, if ur just the right distance ur fnie, and maybe at a certain distance and u could slingshot yourself at higher-then-normal-ship-speeds around it.

Star would also have gravity and small objects like moons could exert a little force too. Whcih again would mean more careful planning for jumps, nearby by feilds could also effect bombs.

maybe even a gravaity well based weapon? (homeworld1/2 Grav. Well generators)

I think this would allow for a better style of game play, as not only would you have to be good at fighting where there is no gravity, you would have to learn to compensate were there is, producing a better pilot and a better player.

The idea of gravity slightly effecting Lasers would be cool as well. but i think it might be a bit too much.

fix gamebreaking bugs/glitches/wtf's first, then add on realism

agree with doran as well.

Well, first, take away planet collisions...just go above or under them...I think I heard this idea said in the lobby...

/me imagines UGTO station staying on top of a large gas giant, firing QSTs...

If you hit planets with no lag, then you deserve to be pancaked.

If this gravity idea doesn't increase lag problems, then the increased chance to hit a planet could be compensated by just a little skill.

However.... I must agree with Fatty here. Good idea tough.

Yeah it is a great idea to have more Realism ie: Gravity,

but

just think of where it is on the mighty list of things to do.

In a perfect world,.. ( one being a heavily funded Darkspace ) these things would all be here. no lag, gravity, etc..

but as it stand id rather get a Y-Axis b4 Gravity gets put in.

not to mention Reverse Thrusters,, Side thrusters.. Yaw pitch role...

You have a role, char, its to shut yer mouth! But on that note, I wouldn't mind seeing some actual roll to go with yaw & pitch to increase turning...

Okay, here's your way to bomb planets folks.

1. Fire bombs at gravity well of planet. Gravity will then accelerate your bombs to faster than their normal speeds.

2. Bombs will spiral around the planet, whether they missed or not, and eventually hit unless shot down by point defense.

3. Gravity will continue to accelerate the bombs until they are virtually impossible to hit by anything

4. Bombs slam into side of planet.

5. Bomber gets insanely cheap bombing pres.

Uhm, yeah.

I'm with Doran.
