Does anyone know why the wormhole device on stations sometimes don't work for no apparent reason. I hit the j key and nothing happens, then it starts to recharge again. Is it lag or some bug?

Part of the functionality is my understanding -- this info is from playing, NOT seeing the documentation on the unit.

There's always a random probability that they will simply fail.

If you attempt to generate a Wormhole either in or to an interdictor field, it will most likely fail.

If you are moving (your own ship) when attempted, it will probably fail.

Best technique is come to a complete stop, and then pick a spot more than 1K out from enemy planets (or at least a few hundred K out from a friendly planet)...destination terminus will still be random.

lol, yeah why r u not being teh roXXor?

@Unknown, now that we have the dumb answers out of the way. I know what your talking about. I get the same thing, somtimes things just dont work and theres no explanation for why. In other posts/ threads.. backy has said that there is somekind of memory loss here and there. now im not a programer or a wana be tech, but i was also pointing the finger at the lag.

Sometimes it fails if there are too many ships in the vacinity.

It should fail if you try to open one within a planet.

It should fail if you try to open it within a dictor field (source or exit).

Other times, it just fails randomly, nothing can be done about it.

Tips would be : only open it 300 gu from planets, manualy target 1000gu outside enemy planets, so that there is a 50% chance it will open on the outersphere of the enemy dictor range. Face away from multiple ships when trying to open one.

Sounds like it fails for just about anything

It fails if you use flux boats a lot too, so don't flux

I read something about this.

Dictor fields have nothing to do with WH failure.

If you try to open a WH within 200gu (I think, but it may be 250) it will fail.

I believe those few WHs that DO somehow manage to open inside planets are just somekind of random bug. I could try to find the exact post in which I read this .......but I doubt I will find it.

They are meant to fail within dictor range, either that or they are meant to be generated exactly outside of the dictor range, I cant remember. But I swear they arnt meant to be able to be generated WITHIN enemy dictor's.

yeah.. like Jack said.. i recall that too.

they will fail if you target within a dictor... or used to.

the thing is... the WH has a radius of possible spawning points from where you target. so it is possible to open a WH (or was i remember) within a dictor field if you targeted outside the field. but if you target in the field it will automatically fail.. ( possible electromagnetic interferance theory?)

at any rate... should you have an issue with it repeatedly failing i'd check your location for dictor interferance and assume that the target location is within that interferance and try a new target location.

I'm still looking for that post.

Anyway. WHs are not supposed to open INSIDE enemy dictor range, but that has nothing to do with why they Fail to generate sometimes, I ALWAYS target the enemy planet when I create a WH. They fail due to the distance from Planets, Jumpgates, etc. Try to open a WH inside 200 gu of a planet or Jumpgate and it will fail. I read this post a while back, and since then I have had 1 WH fail, and I was 250gu from the SY planet but didn't realize I was 175 from The planet next to it.

I guess mine is due to the undetermined causes. Mine failed twice while I was fully stopped and was merely going to another friendly planet not too far away. There were no obstacles and I targeted about 1000 gu from the planet . sigh

Some wormholes of mine have failed with no reason and it didn't say that they failed. I'm pretty sure it was lag since that causes most of the problems around here.

They just don't like you.

Don't feel bad, they don't like me either.
