OK, I know it has been discussed before, and to my surprise most vet players were against the idea, but 3D movement would be uber-cool.
I have a suggestion how it can be done without destroying the basic game mechanics. Just set nine planes. Have plane number 0 be the middle, and allow the player to shift up or down. Have this done with a hot key, one key for up, one for down, and perhaps modifiers like shift + down takes you all the way down. Nothing drastic, but a big change in the possibilities during battle, and a step towards modernizing DS a little.
I just think bringing and AC in from above a Hive would rock.
Oh yeah, add ventril and dorsal armor of course.

I'd kill to have DS in 3d - but the question is this: would it be full 3d as in you can turn your ship facing up, down & all that - or would it just be like flying under a station in that your ship moves down vertically?

You'll have to wait for Darkspace 2 for that. I'm sure that Faustus made 2D movement on purpose in this Darkspace so he could get a sequel.

Although Medusa supports full 3d movement it's just not practical in terms of ease of gameplay. Gameplay > than realism.
If DS was to go 3d it would be full 3d movement and not some planar hash.

I think that Adding 3D movement would GREATLY improve DarkSpace, not only by setting this game further apart from StarTrek StarFleet Command, but by giving the Loyal Darkspace pattrons something that EvE could never give their customers... Great Naval Space Fleet Vs Fleet Combat!

We already have some intense fleet on fleet action - but I'd love to be able to come up on the soft underbelly of a mandible or something in my little AC
Perhaps, if we did this we could impliment some sort of collision system...

From what Ive heard through the grapevine and from the Old timers here on DS, is that there used to be a collision system in place, but they got rid of it because people didnt like it or something like that..
I wouldnt mind seeing this system put back in.

even without the 3d system a collision system would be nice. It could be set up where your ship is either in cllision or avoid mode, in avoid mode you would simply pass under any ship, but in collide mode you would hit it. If 2 ships had mismatched modes there would be some system like paper rocks scissors done by the game to determine the effect.

If there was a collision system in place, it should take effect 1) When it is set, 2) When your hull reaches a certain point - and if you collide with an enemy you should take a serious hit in pres - so people just don't go ramming into stations wildly (like I do now )

Sweet! From what I've read (unless my eyes have deceived me), I get to post the first negative post about 3D movement on this thread!
Sure, 3D adds a whole new plane of fun and adds a bunch of new variables... and... well......
Hard for me to think of positives when I'm so dead-set against it.
Now, I know I'm biased against 3D movement... and the reason why is because I'm simply not a big person on flying. Air and space simulators in which you had to twirl and invert and look above you and look below you while the controls were so bloody confusing to you (substitue "me" or "I" for "you" for accuracy and exactness) were not exactly the most enjoyable games. I despise these types of games with a passion simply because, when all is said and done, I'm angry and dizzy.
All right, maybe DarkSpace 3D wouldn't have all of those whistles and gadgets and gizmos... but... honestly, I'm not so keen on finding out how it would be. Sure, the extra ways to attack would be rather interesting and give further meaning to strategy... but, the confusion that the new variables would bring (not to mention unforeseeable bugs/glitches/"taking advantage of the system" --- I would give examples, but, seeing as how these are unforeseeable, I can not) would surely erase most of the enjoyment that I get out of DarkSpace... save for building, anyway.

I dunno, Darkspace always seemed to me as a representation of naval combat transposed into a science fiction setting. I mean, really...how often does an aircraft carrier lift into the sky while moving on its side (actualy, reminds me of a flight simulator mod :|)
